FDA Warns of Sunscreen Spray's Flammability Risk
SUNDAY, July 21 (HealthDay News) -- Certain sunscreen sprays worn close to an open flame may pose a risk of catching fire, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.
The agency said it knows of five incidents in which people wearing sunscreen spray near sources of flame suffered significant burns that required medical treatment. The products involved in these incidents were recalled and should no longer be on store shelves.
However, many other sunscreen spray products contain flammable ingredients, commonly alcohol. The same is true for some other spray products -- including insect repellants and hairsprays -- and even some non-spray sunscreens, the FDA said.
"Based on this information, we recommend that after you have applied a sunscreen spray labeled as flammable, you consider avoiding being near an open flame, sparks or an ignition source," Dr. Narayan Nair, a lead medical officer at the FDA, said in an agency news release.
Many flammable products have a label warning against their use near an open flame. Never apply a product labeled as flammable when you are near a source of flame.
However, the five incidents reported to the FDA occurred after the sunscreen spray had been applied. The sources of flame included lighting a cigarette, standing too close to a lit citronella candle, approaching a barbecue grill and doing welding.
These incidents indicate that catching fire is possible even if you believe you have waited long enough for the sunscreen to dry and your skin feels dry, the FDA said.

How to keep chlorine from ruining your hair and skin
There is perhaps nothing greater than diving into a pool after a long, hot day at the office. While you might enjoy the instant cool-down this activity brings, you may be less than thrilled when you notice your skin drying, your hair breaking or your swimsuit fading due to chorine exposure. Even though the chemical is necessary in helping to maintain a pool, there are ways to keep it from ruining your locks and complexion.
Here are a few tips for helping to support your hair and skin without limiting your pool time.
Hair remedies
Your hair can be ultra sensitive to the effects of chlorine, which can lead to issues like split ends and flyaways because the chemical tends to strip the natural oils that protect your locks. Luckily, using certain hair products, mainly ones that are oil- or silicone-based, can help keep such issues at bay, Health magazine reports.
A product like Phytodensium Anti-Aging Serum might be appropriate to apply prior to jumping in the pool. This serum boasts a slew of vitamins as well as a tyrosine derivative to help protect the hair and prevent future damage. You could also opt to slather coconut oil in your hair to gain similar protective benefits.
Another simple trick is to wet your hair with cold, fresh water prior to diving in. The experts at Yahoo! Sports report doing so can help slow down how fast the chlorine is absorbed into your locks, keeping your hair better protected from the get-go. On the same note, opting to shower shortly after you exit the pool can also limit how much chlorine seeps into your hair.
Skin savers
Now that your locks are ready to enjoy a summer by the pool, it's time to prep your skin. According to Health magazine, similar to how chlorine dries out your hair, the same issue can arise with your skin. Dry, flaky skin is not only itchy and annoying, but it can take away from your bronzed appearance as well.
While using serums is recommended to protect your hair, investing in luxury spa products and thick, moisturizing lotions is a must for protecting your skin. The Elemis Spa At Home Skin Nourishing Body Lotion is sure to repair the harmful effects of chlorine thanks to its rich formula and ingredients like camellia as well as macadamia and jojoba oils.

I personally feel that any time you go on vacation, you should get the party started before you leave with a fun, bright, and/or quirky nail look. It just gets you in the mood, you know what I mean? Here are four lovely looks I spotted on the red carpet this week that would be great for just such an occasion.
There was the orange pedicure Angie Harmon wore on the TCA tour:
The fun blue glitter look I spotted on singer-actress JoJo:
This purple shade on Jennifer Lawrence is memorable—both sweet and energetic:
And then for you more playful types, Kaley Cuoco went out and wore black-and-blue-striped nail art for ya:
Why am I talking about vacation nails? Well, I'm taking next week off to rest and recharge. But Petra and Amy will be around to hold down the fort as usual, and two great writers, Marissa Gold and Cheryl Wischhover, will be helping fill in the gaps. Everyone, be on your best behavior, OK? I don't want to hear about any blowups over lipstick when I get back.
My vacation nail polish pick? I went with Essie DJ Play that Song, a neon pinky purple that says "I might sleep late every day next week, but I'll be doing it with jazz hands."
Which of these looks would you wear on your next vacay?

Revitalize your look in a few easy steps
It can be easy to get into a style rut, whether you find yourself always pulling your hair back into a ponytail or dipping into the same beauty products every day. However, if you've been unhappy with how you look in photographs or notice other women at work standing out thanks to their hair or makeup tricks, it might be time to revamp your overall style. Doing so might help give your confidence a boost as well.
Part ways with your current hairstyle
This is perhaps one of the easiest, yet dramatic ways to transform your current look, and all it requires is for you to switch up your part. The pros at Woman's Day magazine report simply going from a side part to a middle part - or vice versa - can make a big difference in your look. Not only can this tip transform how your hair flatters your face, but you're likely to have more volume at the roots since the follicles got used to lying flat in one direction.
A San Diego-based hairstylist told the news outlet the best way to have a successful transition is change your part before you go to bed, using a comb and styling cream to keep it in place. You could also opt to don a thick, no-slip elastic headband during the night to prevent movement. However, if you do wear a headband, make sure to put a few tissues in between the hair and the head piece to prevent creasing.
By morning, your new part should be perfect and flyaway free.
Be bold with your nails
You might think that switching out your standard red or light pink professional nail polish for a more chic and modern shade like CND Nail Effect - Pearls in Copper Pearl may do little in terms of transforming you look, but nail fashion is a major statement and can help? you show your true personality. While changing up your mani/pedi routine is major, deciding to try out a different shape on your nails is an even bolder option.
TLC reported on a few shapes out there today that are just as chic as they are professional. One trend, the almond, might be a great step out of your comfort zone. This style calls for longer nails with a softer, rounded tip, similar to the shape of an almond. While the trend is meant to be long, you could opt to go for a shorter version at first to see if the look is right for you.
Other styles, including sharp-corner squared tips, squared oval tips and stiletto tips, are also on trend right now.

Here’s the One Skin Care Potion You Need to Add to Your Morning Routine Before the Summer Is Over
We’re at the halfway point of summer now, and that means we have about six more weeks to frolic in the sun without a care in the world. (I prefer to look at this in a "glass half full" kind of way.) Come fall though, you may regret some of that frolicking, especially if you forgot to wear sunscreen.
And even if you religiously use sunscreen—and let’s face it, we all forget sometimes—sun, the elements, and pollution can wreak havoc on your face thanks to a process called oxidation. Oxidation produces some nasty molecules called free radicals that basically run rampant all over your skin trying to hook up with other molecules and tearing sh*t up. The result of this? Dullness, fine lines, and weird discolorations. Not cute. (Unlike Miranda Kerr, whose skin is inspirational. Let's take a moment to admire it.)

There’s one small step you can add to your skin care routine in the morning to combat the process though. After cleansing and before sunscreen and makeup, layer on an antioxidant serum.
Antioxidants, which include substances like vitamins C and E, selenium, and coenzyme Q10, can actually reverse the damage and even prevent future damage. So not only will antioxidants cover up your past sins, they’ll also help your sunscreen work better.
In the warm weather, antioxidant serums (as opposed to heavier moisturizers) are your best bet—they’re lightweight and absorb fairly quickly into the skin. Do this now and your future winter self will thank you later.
Here are some antioxidant serums to try:

So what's your current skin care routine? Let's discuss!
